CO2 Mechanism

This project included part design for multiple manufacturing processes, as well as specifying off the shelf parts and working with vendors. Ultimately the assembly was made at a contract manufacturer in China.

Overview

Problem Statement

This subsystem was created to allow a user to puncture a CO2 bottle for use in carbonated beverage dispensing. The system must seal extremely well and repeatably, include a solenoid valve for controlled dispensing, and include a safety relief valve.

Challenges

Tight timelines and cost targets. Simple, robust design solved both of these issues. High production volume makes ease of assembly critical. Transfer to manufacturing during the Covid pandemic led to it’s own unique challenges.

Results

Cost savings vs previous model of roughly 50%. Huge improvement in scrap rate. Improved user interface.
